The National Surfing Reserves program acknowledges the rich history and custodianship of Indigenous people on the lands where National Surfing Reserves are established. We recognise the intrinsic cultural significance of these sites to Indigenous communities and are dedicated to actively involving Indigenous peoples in the stewardship and management of these areas.
Through meaningful collaboration and consultation with Indigenous communities, we aim to ensure that their voices, knowledge, and traditions are respected and integrated into the ongoing preservation efforts. Our commitment extends to the establishment of dedicated Indigenous Surfing Reserves, where the protection and promotion of Indigenous cultural heritage are paramount.
By working with Indigenous communities, we seek to foster mutual respect, understanding, and appreciation for the sacred connection between Indigenous peoples and the waterways which is central to their identity and culture. Together, we strive to uphold the legacy of surfing while honouring and celebrating the enduring heritage of Australia’s Indigenous peoples.
