Mid Coast

Mid Coast Surfing Reserve is located about 30 km south of Adelaide mid-way down the Fleurieu Peninsula coast. Kaurma people lived in the area called Ngangkiparringa (now cityof Onkaparinga) that extended along the coast and estuaries and onto the coastal plain. Now the area is rapidly growing outer suburbs of Adelaide.

This section of coast is partly sheltered from ocean swell by Kangaroo Island and the lower Yorke Peninsula and requires a good size swell from the west-southwest direction. When the swell does arrive the coast comes alive with numerous reef and beach breaks, the best surf close to Adelaide. The reserve recognises this 9 km long section of coast between Christies Beach in the north and Moana. It is an area of sand beaches and dunes, eroding cliffs, and river mouths. In between are 25 recognised beach and reef breaks including: Christies Beach, Horseshoe Reef, Y-Steps, Dumper Downs, The Hump, South Port beaches, River Mouth, Rincon, Snakes, Triggs 1 & 2, U-Turns, Anzacs, In-Betweens, Three Poles, Seaford, Seaford Reef, Fred Nerks, The Trough, North Moana and Moana. In addition the coast has four surf life saving clubs at Christies Beach, Port Noralunga, South Port and Moana founded in 1954, 1933, 1959 and 1938 respectively, their number and age attesting to the long popularity of the
coast for surfing.

It was dedicated on 1 May 2018 on the headland overlooking the mouth of the Onkaparinga River and South Port Beach.
