FISHERY BAY, SA – October 5, 2025 — Fishery Bay has officially been dedicated as Australia’s newest Surfing Reserve, marking a historic and emotional milestone for the Eyre Peninsula’s surfing community.
The dedication ceremony, held as part of the Stoke Surf Festival, was a celebration of culture, community and coastline — featuring surf culture talks, live music, and local markets.
The event began with a heartfelt Welcome to Country by Danielle, representing the Nauo people, the Traditional Custodians of the land. Her words were followed by moving reflections from Ngahuia, and stories shared by local mayors (Eyre Peninsula / Port Lincoln), surfers, and community members, honouring generations of connection to Fishery Bay.
“Fishery Bay isn’t just a wave — it’s a community, a memory, and a way of life,” said Susan Tracey, Deputy Chair of the National Surfing Reserves Board. “To see this special place recognised and protected for future generations is something truly special.”

The dedication also acknowledged Professor Andy Short, Co-founder of National Surfing Reserves, who first visited Fishery Bay in 1984 and has long championed its preservation. His guidance, alongside the efforts of the local steering committee, ensured the successful nomination and recognition of the site.
“This recognition celebrates thousands of years of cultural connection and decades of passion, respect and love for this coastline,” added NSR Board Chair Brad Whittaker. “It’s a legacy that will endure for generations.”
“This Surfing Reserve designation honours the deep cultural heritage, surf history, and natural beauty of Fishery Bay, while promoting ongoing care for the land and ocean that sustain it”
Special thanks were extended to the local community — including Elders, families, surfers, volunteers, and supporters — whose dedication and collaboration made the recognition possible.
“The plaque may be set in stone,” Mr Whittaker concluded, “but the work of dedicated volunteers continues — caring for the land, the ocean, and the stories that make this place home.”
